What is a Scar Revision?

Scar E-book Thmb

Scars Made Simple E-Book

The development of scars is inevitable after skin or tissue injury.  The body naturally heals the wound by haphazardly depositing collagen and elastin, creating a scar in the process. Dr. Hruza or Dr. Behshad can evaluate your current scars and help you formulate a treatment plan that incorporates laser, surgical, injectable, and topical scar regimens to improve scar appearance. While scars are permanent, their appearance can be improved right here in St. Louis.

How is scar revision surgery performed?

There are many options for scar revision available in our St. Louis office, including surgical excision of scars in our state-of-the-art in-office AAAASF (American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities) operating suite, laser scar treatment, chemical peels, scar subcision, topical treatments, injectable medications, and combination scar treatments that employ multiple modalities for scar revision. The specific treatment(s) will be determined by the qualities of your scar, which can be discolored, thick, depressed, and/or wide.

Who is a good candidate for scar revision surgery?

Anyone who wants to improve the appearance of scars on the face or body may be a good candidate for scar revision.  The physicians at the Laser & Dermatologic Surgery Center can treat most types of scars, including scars from minor injuries, surgical scars, acne scars, burn scars, and raised scars from trauma.

What type of anesthesia will be used for scar revision surgery?

The type of anesthesia used will depend on the extent of your procedure.  The Laser & Dermatologic Surgery Center employs local anesthesia (injection or cream) for most treatments.

What can I expect from treatment?

While scars cannot be erased, their appearance can be improved. Scar revision treatments can help the appearance of scars by repositioning scars so they are less conspicuous or by making the scar tissue blend with color and texture of the surrounding healthy skin. Specifically, topical products can improve discoloration and textural irregularities; steroid injections can improve the appearance of raised scars and decrease scar discomfort; filler injections can smooth out depressed scars; lasers and energy based devices can help with the texture and color of scar tissue; and surgical scar revision can thin scars, raise depressed scars, and reorient scars to make them less conspicuous.

What can I expect after treatment?

Every scar is different, and there are a wide variety of treatment options at the Laser & Dermatologic Surgery Center in St. Louis, MO. You will receive post-treatment instructions for your specific treatment plan.
