There have been various types of microneedling available for many years, but the SkinPen is notably better than the earlier versions. The biggest difference is a pen design that allows our skin care specialists to treat hard-to-reach areas. Disposable needle cartridges also make the punctures more sanitary, and the post-procedure skin products have been updated as well.
What Types of Skin and Parts of the Body can be Treated?
The SkinPen can be used on virtually any area of the body. Facial treatments require a pen setting with less depth and careful application from the skin care specialist. More than experience with the SkinPen, the professional should be familiar with how to modulate the treatment based on the body part and the nature of skin issue. This type of microneedling can used for wrinkles, acne scars, UV damage, large pores, thin or slack skin, and uneven skin tone. Popular parts of the body targeted for treatment include:
- Hands and Arms
What to Expect
While results will vary from one patient to the next, everybody will experience some benefit, while some people will see truly dramatic change after the entire course of microneedling treatments. Studies suggest a four-fold increase in collagen and elastin production. This increased production is observed over several treatments. Due to the increased effectiveness of the SkinPen, these results are typically achieved in fewer treatments. Instead of, say, five rounds of treatment over the course of six months, you may need only three treatments over as many months. While the benefit of this treatment may fade over time, most patients will enjoy improvements in the appearance of their skin for six months or more.
In terms of the procedure itself, a topical anesthetic will be applied first to reduce any discomfort from the needling. Next, based on your skin type, a thin coating of serum will be applied to further prepare your skin. Finally, the skin care professional will gently brush the SkinPen across the targeted area. Depending on the size and severity of this treatment area, the active part of the treatment might take about 15-30 minutes. The whole appointment may take about an hour.
